About the scheme

Preparations are being made to carry out essential works to Wicken Fen Bridge located on School Lane, Newport, saffron Walden.

The structure will be replaced using precast reinforced concrete box units and new precast reinforced concrete wingwalls will be installed on each corner. An in-situ apron slab will be cast between the wingwall elements to form a monolithic U-shaped concrete apron on both ends of the structure.

The pedestrian footbridge will also be replaced as part of the scheme.

How the work will affect you

The first phase of construction works will commence on Monday 29 April 2024 and will involve mobilising the site and reconstructing the pedestrian footbridge. The main construction of the new culvert will then commence. Construction works are expected to take three months to complete.

In order to carry out the works in a safe manner, a road closure will be in place on School Lane from Wednesday 1 May 2024.

A signed diversion route will be in place using the following roads: Bury Water Lane, Cambridge Road, Belmont Hill, High Street, Wicken Road, School Lane and vice versa.

Clearway / No parking restrictions

A temporary clearway will be in place outside 1-8 Bury Water Lane and on Bury Water Lane from the junction of Hills Drive to School Lane.

The Clearway/no parking areas are enforceable by issuing a Penalty Charge Notice or parking tickets. In addition, if a vehicle is causing an obstruction and the owner cannot be easily identified then the owner is at risk of the vehicle being moved, by one of our specialised contractors, to a nearby safe parking place. If this were to happen the owner would be required to contact the Essex County Council contact centre on 0345 603 7631 or Essex Police on 101 who will have details about the whereabouts of the vehicle.

We regret any inconvenience caused by this restriction however, it is essential we enforce a Clearway to ensure the road remains clear without obstructions.

Passenger transport

We have been in contact with the local school and passenger transport. School buses will be diverted down Bury Water Lane and marshals will be present during drop off and pick up times.

We are looking into the possibility of removing a section of footpath on Bury Water Lane to allow buses more room to turn around. Please be assured if a section of footpath is removed it will be reinstated after the works are completed.

Further information

Please note that the programme may be subject to change if affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.

We aim to keep residents and businesses updated via this webpage and site signage. Information will also be shared with local parish councils.
