About the scheme

Station Way Bridge is located in Buckhurst Hill and carries Station Way over the railway line.

The bridge is a five span structure with three of the spans running over and adjacent to the London Underground Central Line.

Due to concerns relating to the instability of the northeastern side corner of the structure, Essex Highways introduced a lane and footway closure during April 2023. Further action was taken to prop the span causing concern in July 2023.

Our findings do not pose a risk to the railway itself.

Preliminary excavations above the bridge have been carried out, however further investigations and assessments are required in the future to help us to determine the best course of action going forward.

Current status – January 2024

We are tendering for ground investigation works at Station Way Bridge and have commissioned assessments to help us determine the best course of action.

Further work will be scheduled during 2024 which is likely to include deep borehole investigations.  Further surface trial holes are also likely, which we anticipate will be undertaken within the existing traffic management.

In the meantime, the lane and footway restrictions that were introduced earlier during 2023 will need to remain in place for the foreseeable future as this will reduce the likelihood of traffic loading the area that has been propped. We have taken these steps to safeguard the structure and members of the public.  We understand this does cause local inconvenience, however, would like to reassure you that we will continue to monitor the situation and we will review and improve where we can.

We endeavour to provide advance notice of future works, sharing information with the local community and on this webpage when details become known.
