Works on Cambridge Road in Harlow due to be complete in April

20/03/2024
Progress Update

A road improvement scheme to support a key business area in Harlow is on track to be completed next month.

To provide improved, quicker access to the recently completed M11 J7a, a new entrance and exit on the A1184 Cambridge Road has been developed. This will provide additional access to and from the eastern end of the industrial estate.

Additional pedestrian facilities are also being provided, promoting safer, greener and healthier travel in the area.

Overnight road closures have been in place over the last week to undertake resurfacing works.

Following the completion of resurfacing, the next stage of works will see new traffic signals installed, landscaping completed, and then demobilisation from the site.

During this period two-way lights will be required to keep everybody safe. These will be removed as soon as practically possible.

Cambridge Road, Harlow, access improvements

About the scheme

Access arrangement

This project will see the creation of a new junction connecting River Way, a local distributor industrial estate road, to the A1184 Cambridge Road.

The first phase of the new Harlow Gilston Garden Town led transport infrastructure, the scheme will help better connect people with one of the town's key business areas.

Traffic can currently only enter and leave the industrial estate and Enterprise Zone area at its western end via Edinburgh Road and River Way.

To support traffic movements and provide improvedquicker access to the recently completed M11 J7a, a new entrance and exit on the A1184 Cambridge Road will give additional access to and from the eastern end of the industrial estate.

The junction will provide limited left-in (from A1184), and right-out access under signal control. The limited access intends to deter vehicles from cutting through Sawbridgeworth to the north and direct them to the A414 to the south which is the primary route.

In addition, the project will improve the nearby junction at Old Road and Cambridge Road. Improved walking facilities and landscaping will also be implemented. For details see the scheme overview plan.

Main works

Octavius Infrastructure have been appointed by Essex County Council to undertake the works.

Following the completion of resurfacing, we enter the final month of works, with the new traffic signals being installed and commissioned, landscaping and grass seeding being undertaken, and subsequent demobilisation from site.  During this period two way lights will be required to keep everybody safe, but we will aim to remove them as soon as practically possible.

Scheme updates will be published to this page as it progresses. To contact the project team email harlow.widerinfastructure@essexhighways.org
